I introduce you to my 24/7/365 quiet place: our kitchen sofa. “A sofa in the kitchen,” you ask? “What the heck?!”
Don’t knock the kitchen sofa. It’s actually pretty great. Ours ended up in the kitchen when AH (Amazing Husband) and I moved into our first home together. Our dining room table didn’t fit in the kitchen, but my sofa did. Perfectly, in fact. This sofa is my favourite piece of furniture. It’s comfy and this gorgeous shade of chocolate brown.
AH and I love the kitchen sofa. It’s where we sit and chat after a long day at work, debriefing each other on what went down that day. It’s where we curl up together with tea at 3am when we’re awake and can’t go back to sleep and need a change of scenery to break the insomnia cycle. It’s where I sit and sip a martini and natter away while AH cooks our dinner (yes, I do have the most Amazing Husband, and no, you can’t have him). We talk to our mothers on the kitchen sofa. Several hundred mom calls have taken place here.
The quiet corner of the kitchen sofa is my safe haven. I’m sitting there typing my post right now, in fact. This cozy nook can be counted on for quiet at any time, on any day. I sit here on a stormy morning and watch the tall trees bend in the wind. I settle in on a cool winter’s day in the afternoon sunbeams that come in on the south side of our home. On a hot summer evening, it’s cool here with the window open with a light breeze blowing in. Honestly, it’s the best place ever!
I’ve cried here, and I’ve laughed here. I’ve prayed and I’ve read my Bible here. I’ve heard good news, bad news, and every kind of news in between here. Mostly though, I’ve been quiet here. Usually with a cup of coffee and only the trees to keep me company.
Everyone needs a quiet place that they can keep coming back to. A quiet place that they can count on in a world where it doesn’t seem we can count on much. Where is your quiet place? I’d love to hear about it.
